Epidemiology

The Epidemiology Group was re-established in 2005 with the appointment of Professor Gary Macfarlane as the new Chair of Epidemiology. Other members of academic and senior staff include Dr Gareth Jones (Senior Lecturere in Epidemiology) and Dr Julie Bruce (Senior Reserach Fellow) and Dr Dong Pang and Dr Sohinee Bhattacharya (both Lecturers). A full staff list is available from our personnel pages.

The group is predominantly a research group and there are 4 distinct, but complementary programmes of work:

One area of specific interest, across the research programmes, is chronic pain. This work is conducted within the Aberdeen Pain Research Collaboration which involves scientists from across the Institute of Applied Health Science; from the Bone and Musculoskeletal programme within the Institute of Medical Sciences; and clinicians from NHS Grampian.

Epidemiology Courses

We run an annual one-week Intensive Course in Applied Epidemiology. This is a very popular course and numbers are limited to 25 delegates. The 2011 course will be held from March 7th-11th, 2011. For further information contact epidemiology@abdn.ac.uk

For those within the University we also teach epidemiology modules as part of:

Opportunities

  • PhD degree: those interested in undertaking a PhD within one of our research programmes are invited to contact us on epidemiology@abdn.ac.uk in the first instance to discuss research interests and opportunities. We provide both generic and epidemiologic specific training as part of the PhD degree programme. Follow the links for further information on training and being a PhD student within the group.
  • Internships: there are some positions available for undergraduate students who wish to join us on an internship. These give you the opportunity to work on a research project, contribute to publications and participate in training events. We have a memorandum of understanding with the University of Bremen under the ERASMUS-mobility programme but will consider students from elsewhere.
  • Postgraduate training: The group has a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine, Sri Lanka for students who have completed MD degrees to focus on one-year training programmes.
  • Sabbaticals: scientists who are interested in joining us for a defined period of sabbatical study and whose research interests are linked to those of the group should, in the first instance, contact Professor Macfarlane to discuss possibilities. There are a limited number of fellowships available within the Institute of Applied Health Sciences and the School of Medicine and Dentistry and we would be happy to support applications for fellowships of mutual benefit.
